Can We Talk About Israel? is the story of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, grappling with a century-long struggle between two peoples that both perceive themselves as (and indeed are) victims. And it's an attempt to explain why Israel (and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict) inspires such extreme feelings - why it seems like Israel is the answer to 'what is wrong with the world' for half the people in it, and 'what is right with the world' for the other half. As Sokatch asks, is there any other topic about which so many intelligent, educated and sophisticated people express such strongly and passionately held convictions, and about which they actually know so little?
Lien worked and is working on a series of tracks with Heather D’angelo of Carta Fragrances. She partnered with Carta to create a song using field recordings of the places the perfume resources are supplied from. They will create a song with each scent’s release. She contributed Record Engineering, Producing, and Mixing.

Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA) was founded in 1969 to protect the civil and political rights of Chinese Americans and to advance multiracial democracy in the United States. Today, CAA is a progressive voice in and on behalf of the broader Asian American and Pacific Islander community. We advocate for systemic change that protects immigrant rights, promotes language diversity, and remedies racial and social injustice.
We mixed this film, “Coach Emily” by Pallavi Somusetty, under the One Outside Film Grant put on by Eddie Bauer.
Emily Taylor, a Black woman and rock climbing coach in Oakland, CA strives to empower her students through her Brown Girls Climbing program, and connect them to the outdoors. In search of personal inspiration and as a way to center BIPOC voices that are often marginalized in the climbing industry, I began to film Emily’s Brown Girls Climbing program. I saw how the microaggressions that seemed alienating to me, were further amplified for young Black and brown girls. My perspective as a brown woman climber has helped me connect to my participants as they challenge the notion of who can occupy space in the wilderness. In this short form, I found it impossible to chronicle every setback Emily and her students faced during my time filming them, along with all of the ways they reclaim their space. So I hope audiences will stick with me as I work this coming year on a feature-length documentary that allows us to explore the Brown Girls Climbing journey in greater detail. Hasami (scissors) is an experimental documentary that explores intergenerational understanding, grief, healing, and performance through the documentation of Eiko, the 71 year old Japanese mother of the director, and her effort to find a resting place for the ashes of her younger sister, Akiko.
Matthew Pereira was the on-set audio recordist, as well as post-production sound designer, composer, and mixing engineer for this project. It has since gone on to receive just under 150,000 views on youtube and has since continued to garner views.

Four years after the assassination of Indigenous landback activist Jerhy Rivera, his absence is an open wound in the hearts of his family, the Bröran community, and across Indigenous nations in Costa Rica. In JERHY, a Costa Rican filmmaker submerges himself in the town of Térraba, piecing together Jerhy’s legacy and uncovering the Bröran’s struggle to reclaim their ancestral land from the hands of illegal settlers.

LAND/TRUST (2022) explores interrelationships of people, plants, land and labor as it follows Amah Mutsun Tribal Band members’ work to restore a coastal prairie on California's Central Coast. The film is drawn from a body of material collected for the Amah Mutsun Land Trust and Tribal Band archives starting in the summer of 2022. It follows the restoration work in the Quiroste Valley Cultural Preserve at Año Nuevo State Park, which encompasses the former site of Mitenne, a village of the Awaswas-speaking Quiroste people. Directed by Ruth Anne Beutler.

I exist through the recipes passed down by my mom, that have been passed down by her mom, and so on. Our whole lives we’ve been fed things that have disconnected us from our land, our culture, and our bodies. I will never again get lost in the vortex of the American Dream, but I’m always down to get lost in the fish sauce. Because that’s where my mother and ancestors will guide me back.

Many Moons (2022) is a hybrid documentary that asks questions about ghosts and placemaking today– looking at the history of Chinese expulsions in Humboldt County and the people who, often with the help of local tribes, continued to live in the county despite the threat of white violence. Directed by Chisato Hughes.
We worked with David Telles of Telles Bros. Productions on a Short Film based on a true story about racism and it’s relationship to turf dancing. We are contributing audio recording, foley, adr, sound design, mixing, editing, and mastering.
2 Turf Dancers (Aussie and Skeeter) reenact the story of their relationship with a reoccurring stranger on BART. The woman would be nasty to them based on race until one day the turf dancers saved her phone from a robber. The film shows that you should not judge people on the basis of their image.

Lien worked with Patrick Lee for NBC Asian America on a Web series tracing the history of Queer Asian American culture. It is a 5 part series that is going to be created into a short film she will be working on in the near future. She contributed Audio Mixing and Editing.

Nenci is a queer Vietnamese-American singer/songwriter from Vallejo, CA. Her passion for music grew from listening to 80's and 90's R&B/Soul at a young age that gave her early exposure to classical music by playing the flute. This helped her develop her style of diving into the genres of experimental electronic R&B.

How might an intimate relationship to sound, frequency, and vibration inform how we participate in shaping collective change? Centering improvisatory experimentation, creative intimacy, process, memory, and Black temporalities, three Bay Area sound artists investigate sonic interaction as an embodied liberation practice for co-creating new realities. Performing artist and cultural worker Sarah Cargill is joined by composer and scholar Amadeus Julian Regucera, and installation artist and sound engineer Leviathe (Lien Do): a deconstructed ensemble, reimagining the possibilities of ensemble-based instrumental performance. The series culminates Friday, March 19 at 6 p.m. in a special broadcast on SFMOMA’s YouTube channel, followed by a live Q&A with the artist, sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission and presented in collaboration with SFMOMA’s Public Engagement department.

Swimming Lessons is a personal, reflexive film that follows a daughter of Chinese immigrants who yearns to understand her transoceanic family’s expressions of grief. During a summer visit to the home her parents left behind in Beijing, China, she tries to learn what they never taught her: how to navigate a heat wave, how to cook watermelon, and how to say goodbye.

In her new book, Rosenberg addresses the overlooked and offbeat issues of mental illness, shedding light on topics that are off limits, uncomfortable, or just downright embarrassing. This book details every challenging and awkward stage of Amanda's journey with mental illness and how she manages what she calls her "garden variety crazy."

Twirling, Not Spiraling (2022) is a documentary performance and installation by Lara Saab that includes xerox-printed social/media posts, maps, a series of drawings and sketches, magnets, sand, found objects, sound, and moving images. This iteration of the performance is site specific and draws from research around coastal life along the coasts of Beirut, Lebanon where Saab is based, and Santa Cruz, California where they are currently studying. The material is weaved together from personal archives, collected memories, social media content, and recorded video and sound material reflecting around the sea and the ocean.

Oakland has birthed many an artist, the diversity of its streets forging a variety of talented individuals who have captivated a global audience. The Town's latest star? ALLBLACK, a charismatic Murder Dubs native, known for his ability to spin vivid lyricism over energetic, trunk-rattling production. Over the past few years, he's established himself as a staple in the local and national music scenes, his infectious personality attracting fans and collaborators alike. Now, with his debut album ringing through the city, ABOVE ALL takes a look behind the septum ring, at the man known as ALLBLACK, and the community that raised him.

This project was a 25-minute Psycho Thriller short film directed by Marcello Pautasso of the Academy of Art University. The film depicts a protagonist working at a fish shop who has fallen for a girl attempting to escape her fate in the world of sex trafficking. The protagonist conspires with her and his friend working at a morgue to fake their deaths in an attempt to fool her captor, although their plan is foiled right at the last minute.

No fantasy is too obscene at the masquerade balls hosted by Christian King, known to her guests as X. The monthly masked debauchery that takes place at her beachside estate is all fun and games until the arrival of an unexpected guest from Christian's past threatens to bring to light her darkest secret: she is a voyeur who keeps a hidden camera in the guest bathroom.

XANH is a short-film that explores clothing as a form of liberation. Xanh’s (they/them) mother is a seamstress who polices Xanh’s gender presentation through the creation of feminine clothes. As their mom continuously criticizes their wardrobe, Xanh experiences nightmares that pushes them to search for peace within.

In the Arizona desert, a community of Christian Romanians live in the fear that the socialism they left behind the Iron Curtain is making a comeback in their new home, America. Two women filmmakers travel the literal and emotional distance to understand how their fellow Romanians have turned far-right Americans. Threading a fine line between being accepted and rejected by the church members, the filmmakers process the ethics of their methodologies and ponder upon the purpose of their documentation. The project takes a close look at the intersection of politics and religion in the lives of a Romanian-American conservative Christian community in Arizona and weaves a multigenerational portrait of its members. Directed by Oana Tenter and Delia Marinescu.
